Not knowing where to even start

Estate planning is easy to put off, not because you don't care, but because it's hard to know where to begin. So the first step is simple. You complete an Estate Planning Questionnaire that puts what you own and the people who matter in one place. Most people find it leaves their accounts more organized than they've probably ever been, and it means your meeting can focus on your family instead of paperwork.

Getting straight answers instead of legal jargon

In your Estate Planning Session, you sit down with attorney Debra A. Spatz herself. The only goal is to give you information: what would happen to your family today if something happened to you, and what your choices are. Everything is explained in plain English. Ask the questions you've been wondering about, including the ones you think might sound silly. That's what the session is for.

Worried about being talked into something you don't need

Nothing is designed or signed at your Estate Planning Session. You leave with a clear picture and decide in your own time whether to move forward. Some families need a will and a few documents. Others need a trust. Your plan is built on what your family actually needs.

Getting both of you on the same page

Couples often come in with different worries. One is thinking about who would raise the kids, the other about the house or a parent who is aging. Your Estate Planning Session gives both of you the same clear explanation and room to ask your own questions, so decisions get made together instead of one person carrying the whole plan.

Before your first conversation

Complete your Estate Planning Questionnaire, and gather any existing will, trust or powers of attorney. A list of the people you're considering as guardians, executors or trustees helps, even if you haven't decided.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to my estate planning consultation?

Bring your completed Estate Planning Questionnaire, along with any existing will, trust or powers of attorney. Statements for bank, retirement and investment accounts, life insurance policies and the deed to your home are helpful too. Jot down names you're considering as guardians, executors or trustees, even if you haven't decided.

Should my spouse come to the consultation too?

Yes, if you're married. Your plans affect each other, and many decisions, like who would raise your children or how your spouse is provided for, are made together. It also means you both hear the same explanations and can ask your own questions.

Who will I actually meet with?

You meet with attorney Debra A. Spatz. She leads your Estate Planning Session and is the attorney who writes your plan. Ashleigh Moulder, our Client Services Director, helps with scheduling and keeps you updated along the way.

I already have a will. Is a consultation still worth it?

Often, yes. Bring what you have. Your session shows what your current documents would actually do for your family today, and whether they still fit your life. Some plans need only a few updates. Others turn out to be missing pieces, like healthcare documents or a plan for your home.

What happens after the consultation?

If you decide to move forward, your plan is designed around your family, your concerns and your goals. Once it's signed, your plan is kept current as your life changes, so it still works when your family needs it.
